Here are some instruction how to prevent auto repair rip-offs:
    1. find a mechanic you feel good about your car needs.
    2. bring your car into new shop for small repairs like oil change or break check
    3. bring a check list of what your car needs
    4. talk to the mechanic who will be working on your car
    5. get a second opinion if you feel uncomfortable with any diagnosis
    6. request a written estimate
    7. ask about warranty for parts and labor on any repairs
    8. request that your parts be saved for your infection
    9. go for a test drive before paying the bill
    10. read the bill carefully before paying
    11. pay with a check or a credit card

Does it answer your questions, warlock?

One good way to do so is to ask different mechanics about the price range of whatever it is you want to be fixed. This way you'll know if they're ripping you off or not by checking the similarities of their charge.

I think it's great if you can discover that you really trust a specific mechanic. In my case, I left my car at a place when it had no reverse, and I was expecting a transmission replacement.

An hour later the mechanic called and said I just needed a cable. From then on, I've went back to him because he didn't soak me when he could have.

Yes, I agree with you. Being prepared is best. But, it is difficult. Sometimes, we are in a hurry and need our car to be repaired. I have had a number of auto rip-offs.

choosing a car workshop and being regular cusotmer might help.
