Dodge HEMI MDS problem
Looking for someone who is familiar with the MDS system in a 06 Charger HEMI. Heres whats going on. Problem happens ONLY on a COLD start and it happens EVERY COLD START. Engine runs like a scalded dog all day long but once the engine is cold again, engine skips again. I have a #1 cylinder misfire code which I have traced to the MDS system.
Problem: Start engine when cold, within 2 seconds, engine starts skipping, engine will skip for 5 minutes or so then all of a sudden its smooth just like someone turned the #1 cylinder back on with a switch. The reason why I think its the MDS is because I swapped coil packs with #5 and the problem didnt follow to #5. I replaced the #1 injector and the problem persists. Heres the kicker, while standing over the engine compartment when its skipping I hear a loud bang (Like someone hitting the engine block with a wrench) immediately after this bang noise the engine immediately smooths out. Also, when engine is cold and skipping I have no compression on #1. When I hear this bang and the engine immediately smooths out, I have compression and the engine runs flawlessly until the engine is cold again.
Side note: I ONLY run 5W-20 oil in the engine (Mobil 1 fully synthetic) I know this is critical in the MDS engines.
Any Dodge techs out there who have seen something like this and can comment??
thanks,
transman

The MDS does not work at idle. It sounds like you have a valve sticking open when it is cold. Once it warms up the tolerances open up and the valve bangs shut again aginst the lifter causing your noise.
